Rumour: Apple iOS 6 to bring Siri API and Siri for iPad
Apple may introduce Siri for iPad when the company unveils the new iOS 6 software, heavily-tipped to arrive at WWDC next month. The voice-controlled personal assistant is, at present, only available for the iPhone 4S, but Apple may be about to expand her reach, according to reports.According to TechCrunch there are whispers that a Siri API will also be launched, which would allow third-party developers to start integrating the service directly with their own apps. The report follows yesterday’s revelation that the company could finally put an end to the speculation and launch its own 3D mapping service, finally doing away with Google Maps.WhispersTechCrunch reckons the Siri rumours are one of only a few whispers regarding what Apple has in store for the latest version of its mobile operating system.MG Siegler writes: "There have been whispers backing up Gruber’s (Daring Fireball editor Jon Gruber) assertion that Siri APIs are another possibility. "There have also been whispers about Siri for iPad finally coming. Specifically, I’ve been led to believe it’s more of a UI issue than anything else. After all, Apple is using the technology for the Dictation functionality found on the new iPad. They’ve just been working on what Siri for iPad will look like, I’ve been led to believe." While the company is yet to confirm whether it will indeed launch iOS 6 at WWDC next month, tradition would suggest it will.Related StoriesApple launches iOS 5.1.1 with AirPlay and HDR photo bug fixes

ITTO: The Rise of the Brogrammer — Part Bro, Part Sexist Programmer
As technology shakes off the geeky mystique of gadgets and mainstream consumers can’t get enough of their products, companies are transforming their images, but not always for the better. Is This Thing On?, or ITTO, is our Wednesday column showing how everyday people use technology in unexpected ways. The rapid growth of iPods, smartphones, tablets and apps brings heaps of cash and is elevating the previously low-level coders who create them into a new status: the brogrammer — a combo of nerdy programmer and college fratboy.Incorporating the college term “bro” is a nod to the newfound swagger techies are enjoying as their products increasingly become what is hip and cool on campus, and a result, Main Street. Facebook’s highly publicized IPO underscores what the newfound lan means beyond that, to Wall Street, in terms of respectability and sky-rocketing fortunes.Tech companies are taking notice of this trend — something from their perspective that may be long overdue, and are using these terms to recruit young students to tech-start-ups. For example, one poster for job hunters asked students if they want to “bro down and crush some code” to check them out.The new heavy hitter in the tech world is smart and knows code, but today he can also don cool sunglasses, pound a keg of beer, and produce some sexy bikini shots to share with his buds. But do these “frat boy” characteristics add an unattractive element of sexism to an industry whose users are increasingly female? This spring a number of smaller tech firms like Sqoot, Klout and Geeklist got caught in dustups over sexism in their advertising and promotions, involving the stereotype of scantily-clad, bouncing women at the service of the nerd-turned-powerhouse men. And many are blaming this new machismo as part of the problem. The development comes at an interesting time when women are incorporating technology in greater numbers than men, suggesting those who adopt the brogrammer swagger may do so at their own peril.I Am Woman, Hear Me RoarWomen are significantly more likely to use social media, like building or updating a personal blog, than men, according to a Nielsen report last week. At first blush this may mean to the ego-centric brogrammer there are more women to adore his handiwork, but a deeper look reveals something else. The news women are more apt to create digital personas, combined with reports they are nearly 20 percent more likely than the average American to follow a brand on Facebook or social media sites, represents a powerful position in the digital market. This growing female presence is underscored by a greater understanding and use social media communication tools, and online shopping — factors that could fuel greater digital influence as women up their consuming power on the Internet. The trend is already being felt in the gaming world. Recent reports from MocoSpace reveal more women than men play mobile games. Also, a study earlier this month found of a big upswing in the number of tween girls playing social online games, highlighting how the two trends represent the basis for a real and enduring shift in gaming industry.Advocates for diversity may look at the growing female online presence as hope the Web can be an agent of social change, but those who think those changes come from the top down might be a little less encouraged. Not Much Change At the TopAt top companies, leadership tends to be predominantly male despite tech audiences’ increasingly female face. Most of Facebook’s users and its top operating officer are female, but its board remains all-male, distinguishing the social network as one of the few in the Internet industry — and even among most large public companies — that doesn’t have at least one female director. The news from Catalyst, a New York-based company that researches women and business issues, is more puzzling considering Facebook’s powerful chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, the company’s best-paid senior executive earning $31 million last year, is also an outspoken advocate for gender equality.A quick scan of most of the latest “hot tech start-ups” also reflects a gender imbalance, which can contribute to and reinforce a “fratboy” mentality. More importantly, it creates companies that might not fully represent the interests of their growing female consumer base.”We’re long past having to defend or explain why women should be on boards, given all the data that shows how companies with female as well as male directors perform better,” said Anne Mulcahy, former chairman and chief executive officer of Xerox Corp. and a director at Johnson & Johnson, Target and Washington Post.According to Catalyst’s survey of Fortune 500 companies, firms with three or more female directors outperformed those with fewer, bringing in nearly a 50 percent better equity return. So even setting issues of gender equity aside, it makes good business sense to incorporate female perspectives and personalities.”If they just have an old boys’ network in the boardroom, they won’t have access to diverse ideas and strategies,” said Susan Stautberg, co-founder of New York-based Women Corporate Directors.Smart leaders understand a broader, engaged base of users may lead to even further advertising dollars, and women executives, probably more keenly aware of this reality, aren’t exactly waiting on the sidelines waiting to be called into the action.Women Harness Own PowerEarlier this year, a powerhouse panel of the tech industry’s top women leaders at the Consumer Electronics Show discussed the disappointingly small number of women in the field and the challenges they face in a male-dominated industry. The CNET-officiated panel featured Google vice president Marissa Mayer, Flickr founder Catarina Fake, editor-in-chief of CNET Reviews Lindsey Turrentine, and Cisco Systems chief technology officer Padmasree Warrior, focusing on the increasing value of women consumers and how more female tech personnel could influence, build and market products. The pioneering panelists speculated on many reasons why they don’t have more female co-workers. Most felt there is still a lack of support for all students, especially girls, in the math and sciences arena, beginning at the grade-school level.Another significant challenge for women tech workers is not having role models. Fake spoke about social constraints that often prevent female employees from seeking after-hours advice from experienced male colleagues due to negative stereotyping, and vice-versa.”There is a barrier,” she said, and that barrier, which often includes struggling for work-family balance, can sometimes prevent women from accessing the industry knowledge they need to ascend to top-tier positions.”I always tell women that the fact that you’re different and that you’re noticed,” Warrior said, “because there are few of us in the tech industry, is something you can leverage as an advantage.”This advice could run into some roadblocks if the brogrammer archetype continues to thrive and overtake what many people consider is a more temperate gender environment in the tech industry.Either way, the tech industry is in the spotlight like never before — featured in movies, television shows, music and books, and how it defines its own professionalism at this crossroads will reverberate for some time to come. The industry has an opportunity to expand its gender perspective, and instead of bemoaning the rise of the brogrammer culture, it could get busy countering it, by welcoming women and others who don’t fit this narrowing description — if not for more noble reasons, then because it will best serve the industry’s own interests.ITTO: The Rise of the Brogrammer — Part Bro, Part Sexist Programmer originally appeared at Mobiledia on Wed May 09, 2012 12:29 pm.

10 Baseball Betting Tips For Gamblers
10 Baseball Betting Tips Free sports picks, the most informative sports betting podcasts, and the top sports handicappers are on the OffshoreInsiders.com Network. By Robert Bies Most professional gamblers agree that baseball betting is one of the best ways to make money since baseball is one of the easiest sports to handicap. Many sportsbooks (both online and Nevada) would prefer to close their doors during the baseball season so that they can avoid the huge losses from baseball betting. In fact, sportsbooks are happy to just break even during the baseball season. People bet on baseball for a variety of reasons. Some do it just for fun to make watching baseball more exciting. Others bet on baseball to make money. Whether you are a recreational bettor or one who wants to make a lot of money, you can learn to be a savvy bettor and regularly beat the house by using the following baseball betting tips. Avoid betting games in April and be wary of September. In April, not only is weather a factor at certain parks, some managers are still tinkering with their line ups. Spend the first few weeks studying the teams rather than betting them. In September, as teams fall out of the pennant race, it is natural for players to be disappointed, and thus, put out less of an effort. Furthermore, management start looking to the future and bring up some of their top prospects. Practice sound money management strategies. This tip is without a doubt the most neglected area for novice bettors. A good friend of mine told me that he has never once criticized a money management system used by another sports bettor because a bad money management strategy is still better then not having one at all. Take advantage of proven systems for picking baseball winners. Gambling professionals all agree that proven baseball betting systems is essential for picking winners. Dime Lines. In the sports gambling world, a dime line means a 10 cent money line. It is the difference between the odds for the favourite and the underdog. If your sportsbook does not offer dime lines, youre needlessly throwing away your money. Know the target audience of Sportsbooks. A critical factor to consider when placing wagers is the type of bettor the sportsbook targets. This answer will affect your bottom line more than you realize. Every sportsbook caters toward a different kind of sports bettor. The goal is to use this knowledge and take advantage of it. Compare Odds. Not all sportsbooks offer the same odds. Books change their numbers according to the betting patterns of their customers, so it is not entirely uncommon to find ten or twenty point differences in the lines. When you are betting your hard earned money, getting the best line is a top priority. Be Wary of Handicappers. As with any industry there are good and bad handicappers. The handicapping business is full of businesses skilled in marketing but lacking in picking winners. Many offer free picks for the sole purpose of getting your phone number so a high-pressured salesman can hound you on a daily basis. Others offer different levels of picks based on the idea that the more you pay, the more you win. The question you should always ask is why am I not getting the best picks regardless of price? Underdogs often add more value than favourites. Betting underdogs is normally a good idea in any sport, but it is even more important in baseball where even good teams lose 70-plus games each year. The oddsmakers often inflate the line on the favourites because they know the general public likes to bet the favourites. Avoid laying odds worst than -150. To break-even with -150 odds you must win 60% of the time. Given that the top teams in the league win about 60% of the time and the bottom teams win about 40% of the time, you are throwing your money away if you are consistently betting on heavy favourites. Fade public teams and favourites playing on television. It is normally a good idea to either avoid or fade public teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Cubs. These organizations are often heavy favourites and youre less likely to make money on these clubs. As for TV games, the oddsmakers are well aware of what games are nationally televised and they know that most gamblers prefer to root for the favourite! You can bet that the favourite line and the over line will be inflated. You are much better off sticking to dogs and unders in TV games! If you take into consideration these baseball betting tips when developing your betting strategy, you will have a very profitable year betting on baseball. In Depth: 20 best Chrome extensions

In Depth: 20 best Chrome extensions
20 best Chrome extensionsPart of Google Chrome’s appeal lies in its minimal interface, free from stacks of toolbars and rows of icon shortcuts. At the same time, the right extension can improve your Web experience without ruining the browser’s stripped-down style. Here we pick out our favourite 20 extensions for Chrome, listed in no particular order of preference. All of these extensions can be found on the Chrome Web Store — bear in mind that you can sync Chrome extensions across multiple machines if you want to, via the Personal Stuff page of the Settings tab. Let us know about your own favourite extensions in the comments below. 1. Google DictionaryThe best extensions feel like built-in browser features, which is the case with Google Dictionary. Once the extension’s installed, double-click on a word to see an instant pop-up definition (with a link for further information) — find out exactly what "cornucopia" means without interrupting your browsing. Alternatively, you can also look up a word by clicking on the extension icon in the toolbar.2. Buffer for ChromeIf you’re new to Buffer, it spreads out your tweets over a predetermined schedule, so your followers aren’t overloaded. It’s not suitable for time-sensitive tweets (complaining about the latest episode of Homeland perhaps), but it’s perfect for queueing up links and such like. The Chrome extension works flawlessly, composing and buffering your tweet in a couple of mouse clicks.3. Chrome to PhoneIf you’re using an Android phone or tablet, you can use the Chrome to Phone extension to quickly send links and other content to your mobile device, either via the right-click menu or the extension icon. You’ll also need to install the Chrome to Phone app on your Android device, where you can choose whether to open up links automatically.4. Google CalendarGoogle has extensions for just about all of its multitude of products and services, but the Google Calendar one is worth a look — not only does it provide an at-a-glance overview of your upcoming events, it can also recognise when a webpage contains an event (such as a Facebook page) and enables you to add the event to your calendar with a single click.5. Evernote Web ClipperKeeping bookmarks and starred tweets is all well and good, but Evernote lets you create a fully fledged interactive scrapbook of all the interesting material you find on the Web. This is one of the official extensions, which enables you to quickly add content to your Evernote account ready for sorting out later. You’ll need to register an account at first.6. Awesome ScreenshotGet past the over-the-top name and Awesome Screenshot is a very useful screenshot tool that manages to be both packed with features and easy to use. It’s possible to add annotations, capture entire webpages (even when they are only partially visible), share pictures quickly via the internet, and more. Images can be saved locally, uploaded or copied to the clipboard as required.7. TinEye Reverse Image SearchIf you’re looking for a bigger version of a certain image or want to find out where a picture originated from, then TinEye can help — this reverse image search takes your source picture and looks for other matching instances of it on the Web. There’s no icon added to the Chrome interface, just an extra option on the right-click context menu.8. Click&CleanTake more control over what your PC and your browser knows about you with Click&Clean — the extension can help you erase your browsing history, edit your privacy settings, remove tabs based by domain, view cached video files, and more. It also links to some of Chrome’s less well-known areas, such as the built-in Task Manager.9. TooManyTabs for ChromeTabbed browsing means we’re all surfing the Web faster and more efficiently than ever before, but if you often find yourself lost in a forest of open tabs, use TooManyTabs to better manage them. Get an overview of all open tabs, ’suspend’ individual tabs for later viewing, search through all of your tabs at once, and more.10. Download MasterIf you need to download all of the files from a particular page, be they pictures or Zip files, Download Master can lend a hand. Click the extension icon to see a list of all available links, which you can then filter based on file type or keyword. The downloads themselves are handled by Chrome’s built-in download manager.11. ReadabilityBanish adverts, sidebar videos and other on-screen junk with Readability — click the extension icon to see a clean, clear version of the article you’re currently viewing. The extension works without a Readability account, though if you sign up for one you can also save articles for later reading. The extension can send articles to your Kindle device too.12. RapportiveGmail is getting better at adding contact info alongside emails, but Rapportive is still streets ahead. Pull in data from Twitter, LinkedIn and other social networks to make the right-hand contact pane much more useful. The extension works seamlessly in the background, requires little in the way of configuration and soon feels like a native part of Gmail.13. Last.fm scrobblerLast.fm’s various desktop clients and integrated tools do a decent job of tracking your listening history, but what about the tunes you’re hearing on the wilds of the Web? If you want to log these tracks too, install the Last.fm scrobbler extension, which can pick up songs on YouTube, MySpace, Deezer and many other streaming websites.14. Send to KindleIf you happen to have joined the eReading revolution, then the Send to Kindle extension will definitely be of interest — transfer webpages and articles to your portable device with most of the unwanted extras stripped out along the way. The extension has been tweaked to work well with a wide range of sites, including Wikipedia, Quora, Google Reader, MetaFilter and others.15. AddThis — Share & BookmarkDoes a webpage exist if it hasn’t been shared on a social media network? If you’re eager to share your latest online find with as many of your contacts as possible, AddThis makes it easy. It’s tightly integrated with the big two (Facebook and Twitter) and supports many more services besides — it can even work with Gmail and Instapaper.16. RadioplayerBased around content from Radioplayer, the official UK hub for over 300 online stations, Radioplayer pops up in a new window and lets you listen to the football commentary or enjoy the biggest hits of the 80s while you browse. Additional content underneath the playback bar, from information about the current show to further reading on the Web, varies from station to station.17. Lookup Companion for WikipediaOpening a new tab for Wikipedia-ing purposes is old hat — use this streamlined extension instead and avoid having to leave the page you’re on. Recent lookups are saved for future reference, and you can browse forwards and backwards in the extension window, which displays the mobile version of Wikipedia pages to make them as compact as possible.18. Dr.Web Anti-Virus Link CheckerChrome has plenty of nifty security features built in, but Dr.Web Anti-Virus Link Checker adds another useful one without slowing down the program or your browsing. Once installed, the extension lets you scan links before you visit them, just in case your group of friends and family has a tendency to pass on a lot of virus-filled URLs.19. Extensions ManagerFinally, an extension to help you better manage your extensions, as well as the themes and apps you’ve installed within Google Chrome’s walls. Extensions Manager filter through outdated or disabled extensions and toggle their status with a single click, and access the options page for any installed extension. Google would do well to incorporate the ideas here into Chrome itself.20. timeStats betaWant to know where you’ve spent all your time on the Web? Are you absolutely sure? timeStats beta sits quietly in the toolbar logging everything that you do and then brings up a sleek-looking pie chart visualising just how much time you’ve spent on Twitter. Follow the Additional link to see an even more detailed breakdown of the places you’ve been.
